Did 11 miles in 84 degree temps. Car ran cool and well. Shifted easy except for one time I had a little trouble on the downshift which you will see in the video. Note the slide from 1st to 2nd. This is the Clark 425T four speed and first is on the bottom to the left of second.
Spent yesterday at the Rivian Service Center in Raleigh, NC test driving both Rivian R1 vehicles.
Been a Tesla Model X owner for 5 years and I love that car — but it's starting to show its age. So I went to see what Rivian's been up to. Drove the R1T first (never owned a truck in my life) then the R1S — both felt massive coming from the Model X. On our way out, my wife and I hopped in the new R2S almost as an afterthought... and that's the one. Right size, real range (sorta), doesn't feel like piloting a barge.
We're seriously considering placing an order. Tesla might finally have some real competition.

Ugh, my shop smells like 600w oil, thanks to the diff and transmission being open.
Pulled the diff housing out today, looks like there isn't much metal to work with. Not enough for a Time-Sert repair and certainly not enough for a Heli-Coil. Either one will end up breaking through the inner edge of the housing.
I think the best repair in this case will simply be to install bolts from the inside and put the nut on the outside of the housing. It's not correct but it's minimally invasive and very strong. It won't look out of place because the heads of the bolts with the grade markings will be inside the diff. There's plenty of room for the added hardware inside.
This is for repair, not restoration. If someone restores the car one day, then it can be put back to "correct" very easily.
Brakes will need the lining replaced as well.

Engine installed in the chassis. Manifolds, starter, oil line, crank and all the other bits installed.
Next step is the rear axle has to come out and be inspected.

Yesterday, we had the National Packard Club stop by an ice cream social. A good time for all.
I found this post card and it immediately peeked my interest. I had no idea that this kind of thing was ever done back in the day. A $50 reward sounds like a lot of money for recovering a four year old medium-priced car. I did see that there are a couple others out there from about the same timeframe. I wonder how long the insurance industry was using this tactic. I also wonder if it was effective.
