More work on my customer's 1911 Model T.
The heli-coils that have shrunk are all close to a water passage. I believe that there was some weeping from the water jacket to the head bolt hole. The head bolt holes all have some corrosion in them. If the cast iron behind the stainless heli-coil gets rusty, the corrosion will "grow" the hole shut and force the heli-coil to become tighter.
I used a small cape chisel to knock the first thread of the insert into the hole, then grabbed it with a pair of pliers and twisted the insert counter-clockwise to wind it out of the hole.
The hole was cleaned out to the bottom, threads were chased with a heli-coil tap and then blown out with compressed air.
A new insert was installed, the drive tang removed and then the head was installed without the gasket to check that the new bolts would thread completely into the block.
The new bolts bottomed in the holed before they came tight with the head so the block or head have been machined at some point which explains why the old head bolts were a bit short.
I machined 0.100" off of each new bolt and re-checked the fit. This time the bolts all fit properly so I'm ready to install the head with a new gasket. #ifixstuffyoucant #sgmechanicalservice #prewarcar

The Buehrig Model AGordon Miller Buehrig, was called the “Michaelangelo of motor car designers” for his work on Auburns, Cords, and Duesenbergs, chose a Model A Ford as his personal vehicle in 1930. Buehrig and his crew removed the Cabriolet body in the Duesenberg race car shop and crafted a new coach of his own unique design. Then, they installed a new interior (with a special ¼ inch thick aluminum instrument panel), top, and trim at the Duesenberg factory. Buehrig’s “Baby” was an instant curiosity, drawing crowds of onlookers around town. In 1932, he updated the Model A; he switched to balloon tires, installed a Miller-Schofield overhead valve engine, and gave it a new paint job. No one has seen the original Buehrig Model A since the 1940s and it has likely been destroyed.Mike Widman of St. Johns, FL spent fifteen years researching Buehrig’s design in order to craft this recreation. The vehicle seen here represents the car as it appeared in 1932. By using original design sketches from the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, Widman handcrafted the design using the same methods and tools as Buehrig would have in the 1930s.

cylinder block update
these patterns and castings are seriously expensive and I am conscious at all times about how expensive a mistake will be, with this in mind I have decided to 3d print some of the more complex and costly parts, hopefully to catch any issues before they become either embarrassing or expensive or both
I got a good deal on this Nibbler reciprocating machine (similar to a Pullmax) a couple months ago. I haven't had a way to move it into my shop because it weighs about 1200lbs and that's more than my tractor can lift.
I borrowed a neighbour's skid steer today and finally got it off my trailer.
This machine can be used to make profiles, cut metal, dish, shrink, stretch, make louvers, punch, all kinds of things, once I learn how to use it. It can handle up to 1/4" thick steel.
I have no idea if I will be able to put it to work but I can't stand to see old machinery scrapped. If I can't use it then I'll pass it on to someone who can.

I have recorded a number of videos to show ( hopefully) how small errors all add up into big ones, one of the photos shows how the over boring has forced the copper gasket up the bore, and I hope the others are informative
