It happened again...

Left the house with an empty trailer and came home with some cool old junk.
It's a 1928 Model A Roadster. Not a straight panel on it. Good hotrod bait.
The fenders will go to a friend of mine, the rest is for me.
I'm thinking about a 1930s Gow Job with skinny tires and a hopped up 4-banger.
I found another roadster tub, buried in a corner that will be coming home when I can dig it out. It's in worse shape than this but someone will have a use for it.

Very cool Shawn!

That is not JUNK!!! Super cool!

I like it. Chalk up another vote for going the gow job route. Always wanted to build one.

I'm sure you'll spend the evening with the wheels turning in your head as you take stock of it and brainstorm a pathway forward.

Driving around with an "empty trailer"......😀 "what could go wrong?"

I owned my own tow truck for about a year. Not for the business, just to have a tow truck.
That was...
Very bad...

· Aug 4

I always wanted my own rollback. It would have come in very handy the last few years.

· Aug 4

Get an open trailer. It can sit outside and you grab it in a pinch. And it is 1/50 the cost of a rollback.

· Aug 4

That is probably a better idea. Even a 15 year old rollback is a lot of money these days, even a light duty F450 model is over 100k.

· Aug 4

The biggest problem with owning your own tow vehicle would be that you’d suddenly find that you have “friends” that you never knew you had.

· Aug 4

Oh ya……

· Aug 4

Same problem with having a storage building. Or even a pickup truck for that matter.

· Aug 4

"Yes, this is my truck. No, I won't help you move."

· Aug 4

Two things I’ve learned the hard way: You never want to be the only guy around with a pickup truck and you REALLY don’t want to be the only guy with a pickup truck and a strong back.

· Aug 4

I just loan it out. As long as I'm not the one carrying stuff. Me having to actually help is more expensive than just hiring movers.

· Aug 4

Shawn, unrelated question. What brand is your trailer? I’m in the market for a car/equipment trailer that strikes a happy medium between the 7k pound car trailers and the 12k-14k equipment trailers and that one looks about perfect.

Mine is a Double A trailer. Made in Canada.
It's 8000lb payload with ramps that store under the deck.
I bought it to make the move to Saskatchewan and I've probably got 20,000km on it now.

· Aug 5

Hmm, that would be perfect since the heaviest thing I’ll ever be hauling is a 7500# tractor. I like the slide out ramps too. Not easy finding that capacity/style of trailer around here for whatever reason.

Ok class, today we learn about Model A Fords which are all the same except they're not.
I pulled the fenders off to take to a friend and then dug around in my parts pile to find a hood and hood sides.
The radiator and rad shell came with the car but they're from a 1930 / 1931 A. I think the hood and hood sides are from an AA truck, not sure what year.
The later radiator is taller and narrower so it won't work with the early body, the AA hood tops are too short to meet the seam in the cowl properly.
Someone added a set of Delco-Lovejoy shocks at some point, these are likely from a 1930's Chevrolet. I'm happy about this because these work well and I can rebuild them.
This is a Canadian built Model A, it has Robertson screws in all the right places.

As I recall there is a slight difference in the frames between 28/29 and 30/31 where the front crossmember is either flat or has recesses for the radiator mounts. I think it was the later cars had the recess for the taller grille. Don’t remember exactly but it can give issues if mixing and matching bodies and frames. Looks like 30/31 wheels too, right?

Yes, there's three 30/31 wheels and one 28/29.
30/31 uses 19" wheels, 28/29 uses 21" wheels.

Besides the late versus early issues do Canadian parts and American parts work together?

· Aug 9

Parts will interchange on Canadian and American built cars.
Canadian cars just have proper fasteners installed 😆

· Aug 9

Metric?

· Aug 9

So you don’t have to curse the slotted screws.

· Aug 9

Metric didn't happen until the 70s

Yup Robertson is superior.

Halfway through a Model A windshield header replacement, I wished it could have been Canadian and didn’t have slotted screws. I don’t even know how they managed to get the things put together at the factory with those screws. Your choices are predrill a small hole and have the head strip out or predrill a bigger hole and have the screw pull out.
