This Exceptional Velie is one of just three 8-88s known to exist! For 1928 Velie offered three models; the 6-66, 6-77, and 8-88. The 8-88 was the top of the line. It was powered by a 299 cubic-inch Lycoming straight-eight engine. Drive was through a 3 speed Mechanics transmission to a worm-drive rear end. It is stopped by Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic brakes and has 125-inch wheel base. The interior upholstery is showing signs of breakdown but the fabric is not ripped or torn. This car runs and drives and sells with clear title (NE) Vin #180213 Vin Location: Passenger Side Frame Behind wheel Odometer- Exempt First Owner of this car is believed to be from Missouri. Second owner, name unknown, was from Memphis, TN, who sold the car to Frank Splan, also from Memphis. The car was restored poorly in the 1960’s. The car had been in an accident at some point causing a bent frame. In 1995 Bill Sublette, Memphis, TN, became aware of the Velie and continued trying to purchase the car until he was successful in June 2004. The car received a total, accurate original, restoration by Velie expert, the late Gabe Schmidtlein, being completed in 2010. John Nikodym purchased the car in 2012. It has received the Grand National Senior award from Antique Automobile Club of America. This car is recognized as a “Full Classic” by the Classic Car Club of America. This is one of three total 8-88 Velie’s remaining. One of these being only a chassis. John Deere’s grandson, Willard Velie, formed the Velie Motor Vehicle Company in 1908 for the manufacture of automobiles. Their first car was manufactured in November of 1908 at the Velie Carriage Factory in Moline, IL. The Velie Motor Vehicle Company was a very successful producer of high-quality cars from 1909 until Willard Velie’s death in 1928. Although production records do not exist, it is estimated that approximately 100,000 cars were produced over the 20-year life of the company. 170 Velie cars and trucks remain. https://kraftauctions.hibid.com/lot/218660031/1928-velie-8-88

Rare model SV Steam car from 1925. Stanley had gone bankrupt and had been reorganized as the Steam Vehicle Corp of American. The SV was actually a step backwards in some ways from the last Stanley model 740. Although smaller with juice brakes on all four corners the boiler was undersized and there were engineering deficiencies in the new engine.

Interesting cars at the RM Sotheby's auction in Hershey Pennsylvania held from Oct 10-11th. This 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Weymann Fixed Head Coupe by H.J. Mulliner had fantastic styling. An older restoration with some wood and door fit issues the estimate was $200,000 - $250,000 USD and final sale price with commission was 159,500. The price was clearly held back by the condition. As a continental model, it is the shorter 144" wheel base (as opposed to standard 150") with the optional hood louvers extended in to the cowl.. This was a cool feature as gave the appearance of a longer hood. The open fenders are rare and very sporty. A sorted RR is indestructible, but one that needs refreshing can be a daunting task.
