The Early History of Duesenberg: A Legacy Begins Founded in 1913 by brothers Fred and August Duesenberg, the Duesenberg Motors Company quickly established itself as a hallmark of American luxury and engineering excellence. The brothers, originally from Germany, were passionate about automotive design and performance, which led them to create some of the most advanced and luxurious cars of their time. Their early innovations included the introduction of overhead camshafts and four-valve cylinder heads, technologies that were revolutionary for the era. These advancements set Duesenberg vehicles apart from their competitors, making them highly sought after for both their performance and elegance. One of the most notable achievements of the Duesenberg company was their success in motor racing. In the 1920s, Duesenberg cars won several prestigious races, including the French Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500, cementing their reputation for speed and reliability. Despite their racing success, the Duesenberg name is most commonly associated with luxury. Their Model J, introduced in 1928, became a symbol of opulence and sophistication, favoured by the wealthy and famous. The Model J’s combination of cutting-edge technology, unparalleled craftsmanship, and luxurious appointments made it one of the most iconic automobiles of the 20th century.
