Electric cars were around long before most people realize.

Take this 1898 Jeantaud electric carriage from Paris. It looks like something you’d expect to see pulling up to a Victorian-era hotel, but it was powered by electricity over a century ago.

And here’s the part I love: in 1899, a Jeantaud electric car helped push the land speed record to 39 mph. At a time when the automobile itself was still a novelty, electric cars were already competing for speed records.

We tend to think of electric vehicles as something new, but the early days of motoring were actually a real mix of electric, steam, and gasoline powered machines. Electric cars had some real advantages back then, especially when starting a gasoline engine could be an adventure of its own.

Gasoline eventually won out for a lot of reasons, but it’s fascinating to see how some of these early ideas have come full circle.

A lot of automotive history is hiding in plain sight. This little carriage is a pretty good reminder that the future of motoring has a long past.

1914 Pathfinder axle repairs.

First off, this isn't a restoration and my customer would like the car to keep looking like a survivor. Rather than steam clean and blast the axle housing, it's been degreased and pressure washed to get the majority of the grime off so I can work on it.
Whatever steel this housing is made of, it's very soft and some ham-fisted individual in the past has managed to strip out all of the threads that hold the differential into the housing. There isn't enough material around the hole for a threaded insert repair and making a repair ring for the inside would be time consuming so I came up with this.
1/2" bolts were threaded through the remaining threads in the housing to act as studs. They're held in place with Loctite sleeve retainer which, frankly, is magic and can be used to repair worn keyways and press fits that are no longer press fit.
Nothing on the housing has been modified so if someone wants to restore it down the road, they won't hate me.

Machining the Cylinders

The raw castings are tapered on the  flange faces, this because the pattern is split into two halves to mould and tapered to allow the two halves to come out of the sand, this is called draw, because of this there is no flat surface to clamp down for machining, this is where experience plays a part AI never can. an aluminium billet is clamped to the mill bed and two location pockets are bored larger than the finished bores, so that further down the line we can bore finished size through without hitting the pocket. next two plugs are made with the location size on the bottom and a size that will snugly fit into a raw casting on the other, now when we clamp down we have to shim and pack the tapered edges until the bore in the top of the casting is dead above the locations in the bottom, turn over and repeat and after several goes the flanges become parallel and the bores run true, then the first roughing bore,,, ports look fantastic, these castings are much better than the originals and I am very please so far.

Hudson 308 top end id assembly

Well the Hudson had been getting harder to start when it was warm. I thought it was low voltage at the coil or vapor lock. I did a compression check on it and found all cylinders low 2 of them were around 30 there was also a 1/2 inch section of head gasket missing between cylinders 3 and 4. Getting all the parts together now. I need an exhaust manifold if anyone knows of one. Check outy YouTube page for some videos of it

To Love and Appreciate the Unrestored Car

This 1926 Lincoln just came on the market in Ohio and it just reminded me how much I appreciate unrestored cars.   I know "unrestored" means a lot of different things to different people.  The word has a broad meaning in the hobby.     I think we can all agree this car satisfies the narrowest definition of the term.

The Incomparable White Steam Car

After working on whites for some years I decided that I should tackle some of the jobs that people said was impossible, the cranks had ball races ground into the crank and the outer race ground into the rods, when they wear they are impossible to do much with, this is the result of new billet roller bearing crank and rods, along with full overhaul. the White model OO from 1910 is in my opinion the finest steam car of that period
