Would you agree that the common complaint about Abner over complicating things was legit to some extent?  Sometimes elegant works great and other times a simple less expensive solution keeps you from going bankrupt.

these common complaints are generally from people who do not understand what he was trying to achieve and would be happy with a Stanley.
What I would say was that he remade parts that were very similar whilsh chasing the holy grail, as it were, with very little concern with costs, although his diaries do mention " find cheaper method" .....the reality is, I think, that he was trying to achieve mechanically, what you really need modern electronics to do, and the way mechanical sensors work they tend to record the event after it has happened. with electronics you can measure, throttle position , speed etc and calculate, I need this much water and this much heat, then supply that amount, mechanically, you have just throw everything at it and say stop when you get pressure and temp. He was chasing a very hard end result, and was a genius, maybe a flawed genius but non the less.
I would like to ask these folk which part they would simplify, that would give me a better idea of the level of understanding or possibly genius.
however, there are some awkward designs lol

Thanks Chris!  Most genius is flawed in some way.   And normal people would not have the dedication it takes to do something great.
