Meet the 1938 Minneapolis-Moline UDLX Comfortractor, one of the most unusual machines ever to roll out of an American factory.
The idea was simple but ambitious: build a tractor that could double as an automobile. Minneapolis-Moline gave it an enclosed, weather-protected cab, a surprisingly car-like design, headlights, and road-going features that made it look more like a streamlined sedan than a farm machine.
It was built for farmers who wanted to work the fields during the day and travel between town and farm in relative comfort. With its bright orange paint, towering rear wheels, and distinctive styling, the UDLX was unlike just about anything else on the road.
It was also expensive, and farmers weren’t exactly lining up to trade in their tractors for one. Production was limited, making surviving examples especially fascinating today.
