The Things You See While Out On A Drive

I finished up blowing several acres of leaves today and had just enough time for a cruise around the neighborhood. However, I got stuck behind this spectacle, driving 20mph with the 4-ways on. Not entirely sure how they had the bed strapped down but it didn’t fall off, so I’ll give them that. “How you gonna move that bed without a trailer?” “Hold my beer…”

Anyone else have any odd photos from the road?

Have you ever seen someone on the highway with a mattress tied to their roof and the wind force bending the whole thing in to a U? That lets go and someone is gonna die.

I like the guys holding the mattress with their hand in case the straps let go.

I don’t mess around when I’m hauling anything that can catch air any more. Had a scary situation while helping my brother in law move about ten years ago. We loaded this giant, heavy solid oak entertainment center into my truck, standing up against the headboard. It took two of us to lift it, must have been close to 200 pounds. It was so heavy that I assumed that it didn’t need a strap over it, especially since the rest of the bed was stuffed full of other stuff. Rolling about 65 on the highway, a sudden crosswind hits us and it lifted straight up out of the bed. I glanced at the mirror just in time to see it tumbling down the road behind me. Thankfully there was light traffic and nobody behind me. It ended up in the ditch. A week later I drive by the same spot and see it standing there, still mostly in one piece. That was quality craftsmanship. Just glad I didn’t kill someone. Lesson learned.

I was the one creating the spectacle the day I brought this bad boy home. I don’t know if I caused any accidents but I definitely got a lot of weird looks and a bunch of thumbs up.

I lost a hood off of a Firebird on the highway.
I bought a parts car and didn't realize the guy had just tossed the hood back on with no hinges or latch.
Truck came from the other direction and I heard a "whoof" noise.
I looked inthe mirror and saw the hood come crashing down into the ditch.
I didn't stop.
I always check now.

There are just way too many things that can go wrong if you’re either hauling or towing something. I broke a spring mount on my boat trailer once when I was an hour away from home. Pulled the boat out of the water and the tire was rubbing on the fender. Fortunately I had several ratchet straps with me so I winched the axle back in place and limped it home. It dog tracked a bit but got the job done. I never leave home without tie down straps now.

People don't realize how powerful the force of the wind is at 65 mph on any flat surface. I lost the seat cushion off a coach at low speed, under 40 mph on back roads. Learned my lesson.

I wasn't fast enough to get a picture but I did once have a black bear run out in the road in front of me when I was driving my Franklin!

Hopefully not too close of a close call. My Hupmobile has already bagged one deer in its life, I’m okay not seeing much wildlife when I drive it.

When I was a kid my dad hit a moose on I80 in Pennsylvania. This was early in the morning. Totaled the car but nobody got hurt. No seatbelts then either. Wish I could find a picture of the car. It was really wrecked.

Definitely don’t want to see one of those while driving. They’re pretty dumb and will chase cars down the road.
