Mystery Weyman-LaGrande at Penn State

Six "Legrande" torpedo phaetons were built. Two by Weyman, two by Walker, and one missing car by Brunn. I dont think any have new replica coachwork in the Weyman style.

Actually,  the black new coachwork car I was thinking of was a brunn replica of this car.   I'm wondering what the subtle differences were between the cars?   @jonahzivin Any ideas?

I dont notice any differences between the Weyman cars and the walker cars. They were both built following Buehrig's design. Here's the ex C. Peck Weyman J-562, witch has been owned by the same family for around 60 years.

Edit: The walker cars have a larger front fender witch covered up the the side pipes, while the weyman cars dont.

The difference in fenders is the earlier 19" snap ring wheels vs the later 17" drop center wheels.  That change happened around 33/34?   Some earlier cars were retrofitted with the new wheels and fenders.

Most prefer the earlier design, but nobody is going to turn down a 17" wheel car.

526 was last seen out in public in the 1980's. It has an SJ motor in it. This car is like the loch ness monster in the area. The older guys that are still around  talk about it but it has been hidden away for such  a long time that it more of an urban legend now.

I prefer the open fender look also.

Is the black new coach car your thinking of the one Fran made? If so that body is a copy of a Walker, that was commissioned by his customer. I know of 2 new coachwork bodies that were made in this style. There are probably other copies of copies that are out there now.

Yes.  It was a Fran Roxas body.   Black.  I think it was J-255. Originally a Judkins Limousine.

In the 1980's the owner of the maroon car (at the top of this thread) was having the real torpedo restored and at he same time he also owned the Judkins car. He commissioned  a new torpedo body to be built for the Judkins chassis.  Easy to copy when the real deal is right in front of you and you got a paying client. The interesting thing is that Judkins body was  brought back to life about 15 years ago on another chassis and the work was also done at Fran's shop.

There were some really nice sedans that got turned into open car replicas. Sort of a shame.

Nice photo!   J548 is a spectacular car and it is nice to see that it basically looks the same as it did when new.  Usually not the case.

I take part of that back.  I guess the pipes got added at some point.
