New Tires for Tesla from Costco

Needed new tires for my 2021 model 3 for the first time since acquiring the car a year ago. I recalled Costco had a tire shop so I investigated their tire options. They had at least 6 viable options ranging ~$216 and up. I ordered the best option and waited for my appointment the next week.

I chose midday-midweek, so it was busy on arrival. Once my car did get into the shop, the install took 30-45 mins. I imagine if I went at less busy time (who knows when that is when speaking of Costco), I would have been in and out in an hour. Still, got my bulk shopping done for the next 2 weeks and didn't have to pay an install fee! Would recommend.

We were members for a number of years but never used the auto section. That's nice to hear. If the install were to take awhile one can always stop and eat there or check out the expensive jewelry or inquire about their travel section to kill time.

They have a travel section? I’m NOT flying on a Kirkland brand airplane!

Exactly. And I did also time it with lunchtime so their hot dog held me over

I remember the $2. hot dogs....

They are building a Costco about 7 miles from us. Otherwise it is a 45 minute ride to the nearest one so I have never been a member.

Nice post @Joesancle but next time put it in the Tesla forum !!!!

So what was the total bill?

· Oct 4

Total was what was advertised on the site: $220! No extra costs when I picked it up

For 4 tires? I typically pay 1k for tires on my truck.

· Oct 4

Wow! You can’t put tires on a lawn tractor for $220.

What kind of mileage does an average set of tires last on a smaller electric like that? I only ask because I’ve heard complaints about them wearing faster because of the weight vs a comparable sized gas car. Just wondering if that’s fact or fiction.

Travis, hopefully one of the real Tesla owners on here: @DuesyGuy or @TwilightChrome or @TeslaFan01 or @Joesancle will answer for real but I believe you get around 30k from a good set of tires. The difference between an EV and IC is that you need to rotate the tires often, like every 5k or 6k miles. I never bother with tire rotation unless the front end is starting to wear.

· Oct 4

It is true you need to rotate regularly. The 30k number is achievable but it depends on the individual driver and where the miles are being racked up. Lot of city driving wears them faster in my opinion.

Difficult for me to say since I didnt know how old the tires were when I bought my tesla a year ago. For teslas tires wearing more than average, Id fare towards fiction. I know I like to test the acceleration whenever I can, so I am operating my tesla perhaps more aggresively than I would other cars. Maybe that could be why people say their tires wear more quickly.

I just traded in my Model X.. which I loved.. it had 44,000 miles on it and I had purchased two new sets of tires.. mainly for the rears.. they wear way quicker.. so really only got about 20k on a set. Albeit.. it could be my driving.. 😜

Yeah 30K is doable, rotation and checking tire balance every 10K at the far edge helps. The X tires are not the same front/back so that sort of limits you for rotation options.

I have no doubt that a lead foot is a factor on them. I know a guy with a Hyundai Kona electric and he’s constantly chirping the tires in the thing, just because he can. He’s only 79 years old, I guess boys will be boys.

· Oct 4

Why doesn't he have a late model Vette or a Viper?

· Oct 4

He’s the same guy that had the Viper.😂 The Hyundai is arguably a better car.

Yea Costco is great

My contribution: I was going through tires so fast until I enabled chill mode. All that torque and rapid acceleration just destroys tires. Certainly not nearly as fun to drive, but saves a lot of money.
