Huge 1870 Barn Must be Removed Soon

I'm in love with this thing. Is that a 30' clear span with 30 foot ceiling? He is down to 40k but it has to be moved soon. You need one of the assembly disassembly companies and what you pay to buy it is a down payment on the final project. But wow!

Advertisement:

After a ton of interest nobody seems to be able to meet removal deadlines so im lowering the price significantly to get it done. Value far exceeds the amount im asking. Bring cash take the thing away. We can provide trucking. Its gotta be removed ASAP.

I have a 40x65 barn that needs to be removed. All the structure is in excellent shape. No rot, nice and dry. The barn is sawn not hand hewn. All rafters are one piece about 30 ft long. All the floor beams are 40ft long. There is a tremendous amount of lumber. All the granite cut stone foundation is included. There is a 12ft massive threshold that is worn from the years. Could be made into a smaller building or could be reconstructed as is. Would make an excellent venue space.
Prefer buyer to remove which has to be done prior to April1st. We could arrange to take apart and deliver for extra cost.

Check out the interior. How wide is that clear span??? How high is that ceiling?

· Sep 26

Back of the barn. You could rebuild it with a nice drive under.

· Sep 26

Maybe bump the ceiling height a bit, use steel and clear span the basement?

Here are the rest of the photos.

Surprised he isn't getting calls from an architectural salvage company. Those beams go for $$$

· Sep 26

Shawn, I don't know what the original price was. 40k is still real money and you need to disassemble it, not knock it down. A 65x40 Morton building with high ceilings is gonna run 300k plus. Not sure you can pull this off for that number but wow what a barn!

· Sep 26

Call up some mennonites to see if they can move it for you.
They used to move whole grain elevators out here on the prairies.

· Sep 26

Shawn, you want one of those companies that specializes in disassembly and reassembly. Here is one example:

· Sep 26

You could stuff a lot of cars in there. I agree you need to reinforce the floor and perhaps clear span the basement. The steel beams will solve that problem. I see money being spent.

· Sep 26

I would carve out an office and workshop on the right side that woud take away some car space. But I'm thinking 8 cars with lots of space in between.

· Sep 26

That’s an awesome barn. Being in New England and that timeframe, I wonder if the timbers are chestnut. I like how the loft is only on that one side. I can’t tell if the bank barn portion with the basement is only under a portion of it. Might be easier to just do away with the basement if it’s going on a flat lot. I hate to see barns like this getting moved because I know it means someone is breaking up a nice piece of farmland to slap up a bunch of little pink houses. I’m sure it would end up being more expensive than a new Morton building but I nominate you to find out for sure.

· Sep 26

Doing away with the basement is the way to go unless you have a site with the right grade.

· Sep 27

We have a 35 foot height restriction. With the exposed basement it is definitely taller than 35 feet. So sadly if I put it in my backyard no basement. But I love the idea of clear spanning the basement at about 12' sidewalls for trucks and trailers and dead storage.

· Sep 26

That is a lot of open space for a barn. Rare to see that and would make a great car barn. 2600 square feet is a good amount of room. If you are planning on heating it I would figure out how to insulate.

· Sep 27

There's a guy in CT whose company dismantles and moves historic timber-framed houses and structures like this who I was talking to over 2 years ago. From what I know, the basement isn't a problem and the lower level could be modified as needed. I was actually getting a quote to move a historic house from MA to CT but couldn't sort out a suitable rebuilding site in time. From my conversation something like this would easily be 200-300K so the "sale" price is just the entry fee. It's quite nice and while I'm not a barn expert seems to be a rare style for the northeast.

· Sep 27

Would be interesting to compare it to this cost of putting up this Morton Building which is 36x13x56, so about 90% the same size.

· Sep 27

It wouldn’t surprise me if it ended up being double the money to save the old barn with all the added labor of disassembly and transport plus an architect to adapt it to a new slab. Then there’s the insulating problem. It kind of ruins the character of the building by putting it on the inside. This one has clapboard siding so you could insulate on the outside between the sheathing and siding but that still leaves the issue of the roof.

· Sep 27

I have watched these guys for a long time. I believe their insulation option goes on the outside of the building preserving the character of the post and beam. Obviously not 6" thick so not sure of the R rating.

· Sep 27

There’s one in my neighborhood that’s very similar to this one that they have on their site. I’m like one of those suction cup Garfields stuck to the window every time I drive by.

· Sep 27

They are based in Conn so it is probably one of their buildings. This one is the 48x32 but the 32x32 is $174,140 installed on your foundation. Probably not including electrical, etc.

Morton is not cheap either but certainly less than post and beam.

· Sep 27

I wonder how those prices compare to a modern stick build with trusses.

· Sep 27

Gotta be a lot more to do post and beam. But who knows? They are turning out prefab kits. So if you stick with their structures and don't mess with them too much maybe they are efficient? Stick build from the ground up is fully custom. Although you can certainly buy prefab stick garages.

· Sep 27

You can get up to a 32x60 in a prefab but you’re limited to low walls small doors. They also look cheesy if you don’t do something to dress them up. But they are cheap, 75k without extras.

· Sep 27

My dad's 40x36 was a prefab 26 years ago. Two huge issues. 9 foot side walls and 2 posts. Whatever the cost to go to 12 or 13' and eliminate the posts would have been worth it. I think his was 100k way back then. But that included heat & electrical, fully insulated.

· Sep 27

This is what I’d be looking for in a stick build. Clear span and 18’ ceiling so a storage mezzanine can be added to a portion.

· Sep 28

Travis, check this one out. You can make it as long as you want. This one is 36'W x 14'4"H x 48'L. With the 14 foot side wall the ceiling is probably 20.

· Sep 28

Yes, I could make that one work.

· Sep 28

There a are few tweaks that would make it aesthetically more pleasing. If you spend money on the main door facing out you can really dress up a metal building.

· Sep 28

Thanks for the links! 2 hour of my Sunday night evaporated. I love the barns but the Morton building makes a lot more sense to me.

· Sep 27

A great barn. I struggle with the battle between practical and interesting.

I have friends looking to do something like this. It’s not for cars , they want to use it for a small private restaurant for their daughter (similar to the concept/show “The Lost Kitchen”)

If you have the money and are willing to spend it to do something with a barn like this…… the building could be as fulfilling as the cars.

Much more beautiful than a metal building, and almost certainly more $.

· Sep 27

There is a place 1/2 an hour from me that is in an old barn. Beautiful atmosphere but if the food is not good you are not gonna last. Tough business

· Sep 27

Interesting building. No location.

· Sep 27

Jeff, It is in Alton NH. Maybe 2 hours from me. It boarders Lake WInnipeasukaki.

· Sep 27

@alsancle "Lake WInnipeasukaki."
I'm going to remember this the next time my American friends say we have strange names for places in Canada.

· Sep 27

It’s actually Winnipesaukee, AJ just butchered it a little. It was kind of a New England thing to borrow the native American’s names for everything before we killed them off.

· Sep 28

My wife and I lived on Lake Quinsigamond for years. And yes, I butchered that. It didn't look right to me but I gave up.

· Sep 28

😄 It’s always the lakes. The best one we have around here is Lake Wononskopomuc.

· Sep 27

Fantastic barn. Typically they are divided into smaller 8x8, 10x10 or 12x12 cells. I agree with all the comments on the costs. You need the right lot to accommodate it because a high ceiling basement would be the icing on the cake.

Just popped up on Facebook. 25x32 with a 3' knee wall upstairs. Don't know the sidewall height. Built in the 80s. $4500.

Traditional 1980's wood barn available for dismantling and removal.
*Buyer to dismantle & remove.*

We would love to see this barn find a new home, or its materials, reused or repurposed.

Dimensions: 25 x 32' with a 3' knee wall

Barn includes a large amount of weathered exterior siding, structural lumber, loft framing and flooring, wood barn doors, windows and other salvageable material.

The barn is currently standing and is being sold as-is. Misc. contents (mower, furniture) not included.

Details:
• Wood-frame barn with loft
• Weathered vertical wood siding
• Multiple wood barn doors
• Wood windows
• Exposed interior framing
• Loft flooring/framing
• Metal gutters
• Easy exterior access around much of the building

Here is the upstairs.

That is very cool. Financially it might not be a great move, but for someone retired or a guy with margins of time who would have no labor costs, it could be a great outcome. Perfect home for a guy with three cars who wants an interesting building and can do it himself. I’d love to see it taken on with some additional restoration and enhancement. Landscape it, make the doors great, hang a couple chandeliers inside and park a Brass car, a vintage Italian roadster, and a big open Classic inside and tell yourself “no more”, I’ll be content and just play with this.

· Oct 4

Agreed. As opposed to the subject barn, this one is 1/3 the size and 10% of the initial cost. Way more manageable for a regular guy. Also, caps your cars at 3 which is not a bad idea.

· Oct 4

That would be a good plan but I know that eventually I’d somehow be figuring a way to fit a fourth car in there. Gotta push the envelope.

· Oct 4

Your friends in Conn will sell you a 30x36 Gambrel kit for 100k which is a tad bigger and you could get 4 cars in there with 1 or 2 along the back wall. But it becomes a storage building and not a working garage.

That is nice. Might get six cars in there if they were Crosleys. Size is definitely a factor in deciding what you want to collect.

· Oct 4

Facebook seems to be the place to sell your barn. Here is another 4k come and get it one.

Weathered wooden barn is constructed from vertical gray timber planks. The structure has a large central opening framed with divided panes. The exterior wood shows natural aging and texture. A peaked roofline defines the silhouette of this large agricultural building. You must come take it down and remove asap
