The “Squire” Sports Car

I only just learned that this marque even existed. Interesting purpose-built sports cars with 1.5 liter supercharged engines. 110 hp must have made them quite quick.

Very cool under the hood on the restored one. The exterior door handles look like they are from a Delahaye, blending into the style line. Also the instrumentation is first rate. It even has a transmission pre-selector before Cord!

That engine looks like a little gem under the hood. I’m unsure whether the engine is the same design as those used in Frazer Nash or if there is just the connection of the engineer. Frazer Nash did use an Anzani engine at one point but it was a side valve.

From what I can find they were priced comparable to an Alfa or Bugatti at the time. 1200 British pounds or so.

I guess rare is an understatement. 7 chassis built by the original company and three more built after selling to another.

These are awesome and I first read about them in AQ when I was about 10. Have never seen one in person but you occasionally see one for sale. That 110 HP out of that go kart engine is impressive. Another example of the supercharger doing its job.

This one of the Vanden Plas bodied cars still exists. Not sure if it’s the only one. Ithink the red one posted above might also be one.

Would love to see one in person to get a gauge on the size. The coachwork make it look bigger I think. But 110 HP in that package must have been great performance.

If what I found is correct, it was a 102” wheelbase on most of them and 125” on the two long wheelbase chassis. That’s not as small as you might expect. I’d guess about the same size as an SS Jaguar.

It certainly was impressive for prewar. Anything within shouting distance of 100hp per liter would have been in race car territory at that point.
