Pearl and Candy Paints- Why It Costs So Much to Fix

Many here might already be familiar with this, but I thought some might be interested to see what’s involved in painting or repairing a 3-stage paint job like a white pearl or a candy color. The name 3-stage is misleading because it takes several more steps than a regular 2-stage base/clear paint job.

I had a pearl white bumper cover to repair and it seemed like a good opportunity to explain the process on a small part. The first thing to do is pick the best paint chip to match the car. There were five for this Nissan and none of them were great but I picked the best one. Then I mixed the solid white base color and the translucent pearl midcoat. A spray out, called a letdown panel, has to be done to see how many coats of pearl will best match. Here you see the card with 2,3, and 4 coats.

This bumper had minor cosmetic damage in the center that needed to be sanded and primed. It also was badly peppered with stone chips across the front so I sanded and primed as much as I dared without jeopardizing any blend area on the sides adjacent to the fenders. The white primer looks like a very close color match when it’s all sanded but once I sprayed the blending clear over it you can see where the repair ended. There’s not a ton of blend room there, maybe a foot, so I had to be careful. The orange tape is fine line tape on the edge of the black trim.

Next step is getting coverage with the base color over the repair and beginning to blend the color into the surrounding area. Ideally, once the base color is done, it should look like a seamless fade from solid to pearl where you can’t really be sure where it ends. It’s absolutely crucial that no base color overspray gets out to the end of the panel or you will have royally screwed the pooch and much cursing will ensue when it doesn’t match. This color took four full coats of white over the primer to cover. Afterward, any loose spray dust on the blend area is removed with a tack cloth so the blend is as invisible as possible.

Once the base color is completely flashed off and the tack cloth has cleaned the dust off the panel, it’s time to switch to pearl. Pearl is finicky about how you spray it. Spray it too dry and it will look mottled and inconsistent. Spray it too wet and you’ll put stripes in it. Basically anywhere on the panel that has even a droplet of base color will need full coverage with pearl and then it is blended a bit further out. Again, no overspray can get to the end of the panel or it will alter the color. If you did most of the hard work with the base blend, the pearl blend is easy. Now things really start looking invisible.

I’d say an hour or two to remove and detrim the bumper. Another couple hours sanding, taping, and priming. Two hours block sanding, prepping the blends with 1000 grit, cleaning, and taping. Painting is actually the quickest part, maybe an hour and a half with mixing paint. Honestly, that’s more time than it would take to paint a new bumper but then you’d need to blend the color into the fenders, which adds a whole other level of expense.

Three coats of pearl matched this car best. After the pearl flashes off well, it gets tacked one more time before clear coat. Note how the overspray on the masking fades from full coverage toward the center to partial coverage around the fog lamp opening and then clear only adjacent to the fenders.

Last but not least, the fine line tape is pulled immediately after spraying the clear coat so you get a nice crisp tape edge to the textured black section of the bumper.

This is a pearl color but the same process applies to candy colors. The only difference is that pearls and candies are opposite. A candy color uses a coarse metallic base color with coats of translucent candy dye over it to get the depth. In both cases, the midcoat needs to be sprayed very consistently if the car is disassembled or it will end up five different colors.

I once looked at a late '80s car with a color-shifting pearl (repainted for one of the guys from the north-end with gold chains....😎) at any rate, is there ever a way to match that? I wonder if the whole car would need to be repainted due to the type of metallic and direction it was laid?

Thankfully, I’ve never had to do one of the chameleon paint jobs. I know every once in a while you’ll see one of the Mystic Mustangs from the 90’s that has obviously had paintwork done to it because they tried to panel paint it. Realistically, you might not have to paint the whole car depending on where the damage was. Say you had a ding in the middle of a door, you might need to blend it down the entire side and lose it at the corners. Getting an undetectable blend on the same sight plane could be a problem but if it faded out where corners and curves cause it to flop, you’d probably trick the eye. These days it would be much easier to do a color shift with a wrap instead of paint.

Paint and body is not a skill I have and I will happily farm out. I think the learning curve is more than I could handle.

Very cool post. Painting seems like a meditative and oddly satisfying task. Seems like lots of skill is involved.

I’m not sure as I’d call it meditative, because it can be very stressful. I think that’s because you only get one shot to get it right and once it’s done, it’s done. One little issue and you’re sanding it down and starting over. But I will say that you’re very focused in the moment when spraying. In the video, it just looks like I’m waving a spray gun around but every movement is deliberate in my mind while I’m doing it. Definitely satisfying to see the final product afterward though.

Travis, have you ever had it go south on you? Did you end up having to redo the whole thing?

Oh boy, have I ever. Some colors can burn you even when you swear you’ve got it. If you’re lucky you catch the problem while it’s still in the booth and you can wash the panels down with thinner and start over. A lot of times you can’t see for sure if the blend took. I have a handheld color match light that mimics natural light but it doesn’t always show things that sunlight does. On tough colors you always kind of hold your breath until you get it outside to check it. There have been a few that I backed outside, looked at it, and pulled it right back in to start over.

The worst was a Mustang that I did about 20 years ago. It was a candy apple red and was absolutely flawless before the owner backed an excavator into the quarter panel. He was a fussy SOB. We got the car all painted and put back together and it looked great in the shop and looked great if you were standing right next to it. So we put it out front for delivery. The owner shows up and tells us that it’s the wrong color. We didn’t know what he was talking about until we realized that when you stood back and looked at it across the parking lot, you could see a dark shadow in the blend. That was embarrassing.

Repair cost is definitely a consideration when choosing a car color. I’ve never liked white pearl anyhow because I’m not a fan of white cars so the extra work just seems silly to me. I can make a case for a candy red like Mazda Soul Red or similar just because it’s such a nice color.

Actually, I’ll take a 2-stage base/urethane clear over lacquer any day. A lot less buffing and it’ll actually last.

Thanks guys. The candy colors are where it gets really interesting. Ford Ruby Red was one of the toughest ones when it first came out. I’ll have to get some photos of the process the next time I do one….which hopefully won’t be for a while.
