Honed the ends of the axle tubes so that the new floating hubs fit properly.
Also removed the worn out park brake cam bushings and installed new ones. One side didn't have a bushing, just a cast iron bore so it was drilled and reamed to accept a bushing.

Yes, they can break axle shafts. If that happens, the wheel and axle stub walk out of the housing and everyone has a bad time.
The axle shaft runs directly on the bearing, if the bearing scores the shaft it can break.
Safety hubs retain the end of the axle in the housing if the shaft breaks.
This guy drives a lot and carries passengers so safety hubs are a good idea even if they're not original.
