Any thoughts on what this is?

Hi, I would say it is possibly a 1917 Nash. This photo from online shows another Nash with the wire wheels but the windshield stantions are more upright, yet if you look at most Nashes of this era the windshield is slightly canted like in your photo. I think this lines up most of the car's details in order to identify. Still a bunch of cars looked similar so it could be another mid-priced car of the era.

Dan, what do you think of the hood ornament in the original picture?

· Aug 1

Nash may not be right, the hood is a bit sloping. Maybe this is a clue. I'm assuming the hood ornament is aftermarket.

1920 give or take a couple of years. Painted radiator. Ornament is strange. Very few Buicks of that era (almost none) have wire wheels. This is a 1918 Buick with some similarities.

@ShawnG are you sure it is Vancouver? Crane Co in the background was a big company in Chicago. That tower is a distinguishing landmark. Not that any of this helps with the id.

It came up on a Vancouver history Facetwit page, They could be wrong though.

Upon further review, that is NOT the Hotel Vancouver. I think you may be right, it's probably Chicago.

Nash and Hudson around 1917 are close, but not quite. I feel like I’ve seen this car before but I can’t put my finger on it.

The wheels, louvers, and slope of the hood all say late-teens Haynes but I can’t find a dead on match in a touring car.

It has to be a Haynes. It’s very similar to the illustration of a 1918 five passenger touring. The photo of a 1917 shows a different body and upright windshield but the wheels, fenders and radiator shell are a spot on match.

Nice job Travis.

Thanks. I’m still not totally positive but it’s my best guess.

Impressive detective work all around! So 1918 Haynes automobile taken in Chicago?

· Aug 1

It actually might be Vancouver. The building says Robertson Godson Company which was a plumbing supply company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C.

I'm an idiot.
That's the Sun Building in Vancouver.
It was built in 1912. It was the tallest building in Canada for a whole year.

Very cool if it is a Haynes. Last summer I went to the Haynes Museum in Kokomo. Edward Haynes was a super interesting guy. This was very early stuff happening in Kokomo.

I was today years old when I learned there was a Haynes museum.

I don’t know if it’s a destination place unless you are a hard-core Haynes fan or own one, but if you’re up at the Gilmore and then go down to the ACD museum, then headed to Dayton for the Packard museum, you might be traveling close to Kokomo and I would tell you to dash over. The docent was super friendly and helpful. It was late in the day and so it was just him and my wife and I we had a great time.

That sounds like a good tour route.

The wheels sure look like a close match.
