Miles Davis Was a Secret Car Enthusiast Superhero

Most people know Miles Davis as a jazz legend. Fewer know he was a die-hard car enthusiast with a garage that included Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Jaguars, and Mercedes. For Miles, driving wasn’t just transportation. It was another expression of freedom, speed, and style.

🎺 What’s the most iconic car ever owned by a musician?

John Lennon's psychedelic bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom V definitely has to be a top contender.

I knew Miles was a car guy......and he had great taste in musicians to work with as well. "KIND OF BLUE", with Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderly, and John Coltrane. A benchmark in the world of recorded jazz.

I see the article doesn't mention that he crashed the car 1972 in a coke rage and almost killed himself.

Thread hijack......sorry, what does the crowd here think a Muira could have been bought for when they were a 10 year old used car?

You have wandered in to one of my sweet spots. This was my favorite car as a kid. Not the SV that we have here but the 67-69 without the big wheels in back. They were something like 20k new and in the mid 70s you could get one for something less than that but not 5k. By the 80s they were climbing fast. In 2000 you could get a beater one for 200k and a nice one for 400k. I looked at a couple but my dad thought investing in Packard convertible sedans was a better idea.

For every car that enthusiasts pump up as a “good investment “. There are 100 dogs ($).

I’ve been preaching the assembly of a mutual fund version of buying classic cars for their investment potential. A private equity accumulation of things that you could make an argument will go up..

I don’t actually think the idea is a good one, but I want to be in charge of it and spend other peoples money and get to pick the cars.

I seem to remember someone doing this with guitars a number of years ago. Not sure how it turned out.

This idea has floated around and been tried I believe. There are a lot of problems with it. The biggest being the cars are not liquid and require care and feeding to just sit there in the fund. I don't think it will work.

It is a terrible idea….. like going into business with a friend, buying a 100 year-old car that doesn’t run, having four cars that only have two seats each as you drive to the hospital for your wife to deliver your first child, heading off your freshman year to an all male liberal arts College……… tell me when to stop with bad ideas that I have firsthand experience at.

"heading off your freshman year to an all male liberal arts College". 😂

Man had good taste in cars!

Sorry for the thread drift by me….back on track…. Miles XK140.

· Jul 31

Don't trust the internet John. That is a XK150. But still cool!

· Jul 31

This is a 140.

Thanks, AJ, I actually know that, but how gullible of me to not take a close look and just rely on the label on the photograph..

Let's see.
Ace Frehley nearly died in his DeLorean while on a bender one night.
Nick Mason has an incredible Ferrari collection.
Elvis, Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. all had Continental MkIIs
I think Wayne Newton owns a Ferrari Daytona
Chad Kroeger from Nickelback drives a Plymouth Prowler which makes so much sense.

Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen both collect Moto Guzzis which makes me feel very conflicted.

If Liberace didn't own an Excalibur, he should have.

I think Nick Cage and Reggie Jackson were/are the most prolific. Also Sammy Hagar is another one.

Few more off the top of my head. We forget that Jay Leno was a celbrity before he became known as a car guy.

Jay Leno,
Ralph Lauren
Jerry Seinfeld,
Floyd Mayweather,
Tim Allen,

Also Mark Knopfler.
