Could your next vehicle replace your backup generator?

As EVs and hybrids mature, they’re becoming more than just transportation.

Ford now lets certain F-150 PowerBoost and Lightning owners use their truck as a home backup power source during outages. Other automakers, including Tesla, GM, and Kia, are investing heavily in vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid technology.

It raises an interesting question for enthusiasts:

As battery technology and bidirectional charging improve, your garage may become part of your home’s energy strategy.

Would you trust your truck or EV to keep the lights on during a power outage? Certainly interesting technology and quite the innovation.

Have a friend with an F150E that had this option. I think it was an option? Cool feature. He figured it would power his house minus A/C for 3 days.

There is an option for gas powered F150s to power your house but it does not have the wattage of the E and you are limited by how much gas is in the thank.

I can buy a PTO driven generator for my tractor.
Runs a LOOONG time on a slip tank full of diesel.

Shawn, I was looking at the F150 generator option and the issue was it was designed to run at idle so it didn't produce the amount of KW you really needed for an average house. Your PTO with a diesel powerplant might be able to run at a higher RPM for a lot longer than a gas truck engine.

When I owned a 1917 Dodge Bros 4 cylinder with the 12V combination generator /starter, I heard stories that in a pinch, that generator could be wired so as to produce a voltage adequate to do an on-the-road weld to a critical frame crack or similar. Anyone able to comment on that?
