Bentley Speed Six King Pin Issues
More issues with replacing my king pins.. Mechanic is having issues removing one of them.. Ouch...Ain't nothing easy when working on old cars!!! 🥲

When we did the kingpins on the 38 Buick I used 2 weeks ago in a tour somebody had smashed the set pin in backwards and made a disaster. I think they eventually got it out by carefully drilling it.

Looking at the video again, @ShawnG need to comment but has he tried heat yet?

Are there grease fittings for the kingpin?
I have a tool called a "grease joint rejuvenator" it's like a steel syringe with a grease fitting coupler on it. You fill with with ATF, attach it to the offending fitting and bash it with a hammer.
This forces ATF into the joint through the fitting. I've had good luck with it on seized pins and bushings as well as cleaning out questionable grease fittings.
Not really a solution for getting it out but might help free it up if it's stuck, before resorting to drilling the pin out.

Shawn, is that something you bought or made?

I bought mine from Tractor Supply. I noticed it on the shelf and thought: I have a use for that.
Aircraft Spruce has them too:

Interesting. Thanks. I need to go get one of those.

Get one for Ed too...
Make sure it comes from Tractor Supply 🤪

😂

Impact wrench?

Mechanic tried heat (blow torch) as well as impact wrench.. neither budged it...next is to weld a bolt to the screw head to get a better grip on it.. Hopefully that works..

I have an induction heater that I use now, rather than a torch. I find there's less collateral damage since the heat is only applied to what's inside the heating coil.
This might be a very good place to use one.
From what I can see, the thread sticking out of the top is what needs to start turning. An induction heater would let you heat that stub red hot without putting that much heat into the knuckle itself.
That said, if someone has buggered the thread in there, all bets are off.

This is a good idea.

My understanding is he is going to try inductive heat. The Bentley guys told him he has to weld a bolt on to get it off. Hopefully the inductive heat works first.

Those induction heaters are worth their weight in gold. Sometimes there is no substitute for heating the living snot out of something with an acetylene torch but most of the time the heaters work great.

Appears the induction heater did the trick on one of the king pins. The other now has another issue.. the large screw spins but the threads apparently are spinning .. I'll let my mechanic figure this one out.. last resort is simply drill the darn sucker out.. Nothing is easy on old cars..
