Paul Newman owned this remarkable 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, which was initially powered by a Porsche engine. Wanting even more performance, he later enlisted renowned builder Jerry Eisert to install a Ford 351 Cleveland V8. The transformed Beetle became a true hot rod that Newman drove aggressively, street racing on Mulholland Drive and pushing it hard at local race tracks.

I wish I could have met Paul Newman. Based on the stories from people who have, he was an all-around great guy.
I love that he could have owned pretty much anything he wanted but chose to drive things like that VW and a V8-swapped Volvo.

Ok. I just learned something. Paul Newman, besides being a successful race car driver loved sleeper cars.
Newman had a modified 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon with a turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 from a Buick Grand national, which is about as understated a car as money could buy in the Eighties.
