1969 Le Mans: the closest unstaged finish ever. After 24 hours, Jacky Ickx’s Ford GT40 beat Hans Herrmann’s Porsche 908 by just 120 metres. While everyone fixated on Ford vs Ferrari, Porsche kept leveling up: 904 to 906 to 910 to 907 to 908. The 917 debuted, led 21 hours, then DNF’d, but the gauntlet was down. By 1970, Porsche owned Le Mans. #lemans #racinghistory

I'm old enough to remember the street version of the Gt40 was "almost" obtainable by a normal human.

My favorite car as a kid was the 917,  which started kicking ass the next year as you noted.
