Interesting driving experience today. 50 miles one way in a 1938 Cord 812 SC Cabriolet and 50 miles back on the same roads in a 1938 Buick Century Convertible Coupe. The Cord was twice as much money when new 2900 vs 1400 and production of the Cabriolet was 200 vs over 600 for the Buick. Both cars were not made in great numbers and both are highly prized today. The Cord is recognized as an all time design achievement for its styling and futuristic features. Although the Century is famous for being fast (the name a reference to 100mph) the Cord is noticeably faster. Getting up to speed is probably similar as going through the standard 3 speeds of the Buick is simpler than navigating the 4 speed pre-selector on the Cord.

The Buick is a bit taller and roomier than the Cord and provides for a more easier driving experience as vision in all four directions is better. A sorted preselector works great, but does require more thought than the straight forward 3 on the floor with the Buick. The ride of the Buick was bit better than the Cord also.

So in summary, both are fast comfortable cars for their era. Highly desirable to collectors. I love them both. The Buick might be anywhere from 50 to 100k depending condition while the Cord will be about 3 times that apples to apples on condition.

The Buick Century is a really peppy car in a reasonable price range. The Cord is faster for sure but more expensive. Those crazy looks come with a cost.
