This Exceptional Velie is one of just three 8-88s known to exist! For 1928 Velie offered three models; the 6-66, 6-77, and 8-88. The 8-88 was the top of the line. It was powered by a 299 cubic-inch Lycoming straight-eight engine. Drive was through a 3 speed Mechanics transmission to a worm-drive rear end. It is stopped by Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic brakes and has 125-inch wheel base. The interior upholstery is showing signs of breakdown but the fabric is not ripped or torn. This car runs and drives and sells with clear title (NE) Vin #180213 Vin Location: Passenger Side Frame Behind wheel Odometer- Exempt First Owner of this car is believed to be from Missouri. Second owner, name unknown, was from Memphis, TN, who sold the car to Frank Splan, also from Memphis. The car was restored poorly in the 1960’s. The car had been in an accident at some point causing a bent frame. In 1995 Bill Sublette, Memphis, TN, became aware of the Velie and continued trying to purchase the car until he was successful in June 2004. The car received a total, accurate original, restoration by Velie expert, the late Gabe Schmidtlein, being completed in 2010. John Nikodym purchased the car in 2012. It has received the Grand National Senior award from Antique Automobile Club of America. This car is recognized as a “Full Classic” by the Classic Car Club of America. This is one of three total 8-88 Velie’s remaining. One of these being only a chassis. John Deere’s grandson, Willard Velie, formed the Velie Motor Vehicle Company in 1908 for the manufacture of automobiles. Their first car was manufactured in November of 1908 at the Velie Carriage Factory in Moline, IL. The Velie Motor Vehicle Company was a very successful producer of high-quality cars from 1909 until Willard Velie’s death in 1928.
