acess panel on Duesenbergs?

Help me out on this please. Just above the running board and just below the bottom door seam is a chrome handle. I suppose it's some kind of acess panel or storage compartment. What was stored in this area? A curious mind needs to know. Thanks in advance for an answer.

The one on the drivers side is a storage compartment for tools and jack. The one on the passenger side is for the battery. They lock with separate keys as do the engine handles.
