Replacing the CV Boot and Driver's Drive Shaft on 1977 Eldorado

OK, I have a question...I pulled the driver's side drive shaft from my '77 Eldorado to replace the ruined CV joint due to a torn boot. The job went well, dropping the steering knuckle and tie rod but along the way something happened to weaken the Boot seal band. While driving the car home, the boot slipped the band and sprayed grease all over the manifold and brakes. Not a good thing. All I can think is that either the boot seal was weak or I weakened it some how when I fitted the hub into the knuckle. Now I am not as strong as I once was but is it possible to weaken the band by twisting it too hard? The up shot is that I have to regrease the joint and reseal the boot with a new band, and tightener. OK, I thought I would answer my own question for those of you who looked but could not answer it. The answer is Yes and No. Yes you can damage the CV boot by forcing it, but No it should not slip. The problem expected would be a torn boot rather than a slipped band. While it is possible, the odds are that the band was insufficiently secured on the new part.

I opted to replace the drive axle rather than try and clean up all that grease. It cost me nothing but time and sore hands. Of course, now the lower ball joint needs replacing....it is always something. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
